The Catalina Regional Park is a joint project between Pima County Natural Resources, Parks and Recreation Department and the Pima County Regional Flood Control District.

The 2003 Aspen Fire damaged a significant portion of the north side of the Santa Catalina Mountains resulting in flooding along the Cañada del Oro Wash in Catalina. Pima County provided relief to affected residents by purchase of damaged properties and relocation. Approximately 186 acres of property has been acquired along a 2-mile reach of the Cañada del Oro Wash in Catalina. This property is a regional asset that will be used as open space and for active and passive recreation.
Planning for the Catalina Regional Park will consider biological issues, cultural resources, floodplain conditions and existing land use characteristics. Recreational needs and opportunities to be considered include passive recreation such as picnic facilities bike paths, hiking trails, equestrian uses, and natural areas as well as active recreation areas.

In 2005, the Catalina Regional Park Advisory Committee, appointed by Supervisor Ann Day, was formed and assisted Pima County in the development of the project scope and concepts for future park development.

Currently, Pima County is developing plans for three staging areas to include equestrian, biking, and hiking opportunities within the park and with connections to adjacent facilities. Elements include armadas, a restroom, a playground, parking, fencing, and trail connections. The designs are meant to be low impact and minimize visual impacts to the area. In conjunction with the staging area development, the ranch area will be renovated in hope of being managed by local 4-H groups. This will not only provide recreational opportunities for 4-H members, but also a potential business enterprise opportunity. As plans become available, Pima County will add them to this Web site. Please check the Concept Plan link for updates. Design is expected to be complete in Spring 2007 with construction taking place in Summer 2007.
