Employee Spotlight: Nina Schatz
by Karen Dillingham

Nina Schatz, CCONina Schatz , Commodity/Contracts Officer, has worked in the Pima County Procurement Department for the last seven years. Her steadfast diligence, exceptional work ethic and quiet dedication make her one of our most valued employees.

Nina is currently involved in the Sustainability Steering Committee. This conservation group is committed to finding ways to make economic systems last longer and have less negative impact on ecological systems. I met with Nina to ask her a few questions:

Q: What types of commodities do you procure for Pima County?

A: Office supplies, reproduction paper, human and animal pharmaceuticals, medical and dental equipment and supplies, medical laboratory equipment, supplies and services, furniture, optical equipment & supplies, radio communication equipment, supplies and services.

Q: Which commodities do you think are the most difficult to procure and why?

A: I think the radio communication equipment and supplies are the most difficult to procure because they involve FCC regulations and rapid changes in communication equipment and technology.

Q: Do you have any advice for new vendors who are bidding with Pima County for the first time?

A: First of all, register on our department's vendor database: http://www.pima.gov/procure/venreg. Secondly, introduce yourself to the Commodity/Contracts Officer (CCO) who handles your commodity. The CCO information is available at Pima County Procurement Department's website: www.pima.gov/procure.

Q: Tell us about yourself. Where were you born?

A: I was born in Taiwan and moved to Tucson in 1982. I enjoy reading, classical music and meditation.

Q: What was the name of the movie you last saw in a theatre?

A: "Raise Your Voice." My husband's granddaughter, Kat Dennings, played the pianist in the movie. She is an actress in Hollywood and has acted in many films.

Must be exciting to have a granddaughter in Hollywood and get the inside scoop on the movie industry! I hope you enjoyed our Employee Spotlight. Our goal is to let our vendors as well as our fellow Pima County employees get to know our staff. We encourage your procurement questions and strive to offer the best in customer service to vendors as well as our using departments. If you have questions for Nina, you can reach her at nina.schatz@pima.gov. Next Spotlight: Hope Sikora, MWBE Manager.
