About the Park
Tucson Mountain Park is a 20,000 acre Sonoran Desert natural
preserve located a few miles west of Tucson. Tucson Mountain Park contains one of the most
magnificent saguaro forests in the world. Hiking, horseback riding,
bicycling, picnicking, and camping are some of the recreational opportunities
within this desert park. Park hours are 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m.
Other recreational opportunities and facilities are Tucson Mountain Park Archery, Rifle, and Pistol Ranges, Gilbert Ray Campground,
Gates Pass, scenic views, wildlife viewing opportunities, visitors' center, restrooms,
drinking water.
Recreation Areas
There are three picnic areas within the park: Juan Santa Cruz, Ironwood,
and Brown Mountain. Amenities available at the picnic areas are tables,
ramadas, and grills.
Gates Pass Overlook is a popular observation location. It offers an excellent
opportunity to view and photograph spectacular sunsets.
Also found within the boundaries of TMP are the renowned Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum, Old
Tucson Studios, and the Sonoran Anthropod
Studies Institute(SASI).
