Calendar of Events

Pima County Natural Resources, Parks and Recreation offers a wide variety of events and activities for people of all ages, interests, and skill levels.

Many of the events listed below have pre-registration requirements or limits on the number of participants. Please call the number listed for additional information or refer to the most current issue of Leisure Times.

Refer to the current issue of Leisure Times for events and activities at individual recreation centers and Pima County attractions.

9, Fri 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. Feliz Paseos Park Twilight Walks. Take a relaxing, naturalist-guided stroll through the park and experience the quiet of the desert at dusk. You’ll also discover why many desert creatures are active at this time of day. One-hour guided walks on paved and gravel paths are open to all ages and abilities. 10, Sat 8:00 to 10:00 a.m. Feliz Paseos Park Desert Plants and their Uses. This leisurely walk on mostly level trails will be guided by naturalist, Meg Quinn. You will learn about the variety of uses of our common desert plants for food, building materials, fiber and medicines. There will be desert food tastings after the walk. Reservations required. 10, Sat 9:00 to 10:30 a.m. Agua Caliente Park Life in an Oasis. Enjoy a guided tour of the historic buildings and landscape to understand how the year-round presence of water from the spring shaped the lives of people and how people shaped the land. 17, Sat 7:00 to 10:00 a.m. Tucson Mountain Park Sonoran Desert Weedwackers. Join in the good works of the all-volunteer Sonoran Desert Weedwackers and do your part in restoring the health of the desert in Tucson Mountain Park. Each month the volunteer weed-warriors make good progress with the work of eradicating buffelgrass and other exotic weeds from natural areas. Experts provide instruction on plant identification and the proper techniques for removal. Gloves and digging bars provided. You will need to bring water, snacks, a hat, sunscreen and sturdy shoes. Meet at the Caretaker’s House in Tucson Mountain Park, 2020 N. Kinney Road, across from the Desert Museum. For more information call 615-7855 or eeducation@pima.gov.
17, Sat 9:00 to 10:30 a.m. Agua Caliente Park Bird Watching Basics. Enjoy a naturalist-guided bird walk designed especially for beginning birders of all ages, including families. 17, Sat 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. Feliz Paseos Park Sonoran Desert Kids Club: Bats & Flowers - Saguaro Pollination. We will look for saguaro flowers, nectar feeding bats, and other night creatures in the “Cactus Hotel” neighborhood. 24, Sat 9:00 to 10:30 a.m. Agua Caliente Park Foods of the Desert. Discover the bounty of desert foods that are seasonally available in the Sonoran Desert. 6, Fri 8:00 to 10:00 p.m. Tucson Mountain Park Star Parties. Have you ever gazed up at the stars and wondered about the twinkling above, or what mysterious heavenly bodies are hidden from view? Join us at a star party, where we’ll have telescopes set up for celestial viewing.For more information call 615-7855 or eeducation@pima.gov.
7, Sat 8:00 to 9:30 a.m. Agua Caliente Park Weekend Wildlife Watch. From turtles basking in the sun, to great horned owls roosting in the palms, there is always something to see at the park. Learn simple ways to spot wildlife at the park and come back on your own to make new discoveries. For more information call 615-7855 or eeducation@pima.gov.
13, Fri 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. Agua Caliente Park Tarantulas, and Scorpions, and Centipedes, Oh My! These and other venomous creatures live all around us, but rarely cause us harm. Learn about some of the fascinating adaptations of these desert denizens, how they produce venom, and when they use it. 14, Sat 8:00 to 9:30 a.m. Agua Caliente Park Searching For Signs of Wildlife. At this interactive discovery program, we’ll be looking for signs of wildlife, including tracks, nests, burrows and others. Participants will also make their own animal tracks ID book. 14, Sat 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. Feliz Paseos Park Sonoran Desert Kids Club: Family Astronomy - Moon Mission. We will do family activities to learn about the Earth’s nearest neighbor, the Moon, and observe the moon using binoculars and telescopes. For more information call 615-7855 or eeducation@pima.gov.

28, Sat 6:30 to 10:00 a.m. Feliz Paseos Park Saguaro Harvest Workshop. Participate in the ancient tradition of Saguaro Harvest as practiced by the local Tohono O’odham. Workshop leader Stella Tucker will guide the group on harvesting techniques and together we will partially process the fruit for syrup. Everyone will have a chance to taste the saguaro fruit and other foods of the desert. Workshop fee is $20 and reservations are required.
28, Sat 9:00 to 10:30 a.m. Agua Caliente Park Sonoran Desert Kids Club: Experiencing Nature through the Senses. Animals use their senses to explore their surroundings, look for food and even find a mate! Use your senses to learn about the plants and animals that call the Sonoran Desert home. 21, Sat 8:00 to 9:30 a.m. Agua Caliente Park Discovering Nature’s Treasures. We’ll explore the wonders of Agua Caliente Park using a map and compass to find our way from one treasure to the next.  A backpack, filled with other special tools for science study, will be used to enhance hands-on discovery.
