Buffelgrass Action Volunteers

Buffelgrass (Pennisetum ciliare), a fire-prone grass introduced from the African savannah, has gained a foothold in central and southern Arizona. Buffelgrass crowds out native plants, and can fuel frequent and devastating fires in what has generally been a fireproof desert. If left uncontrolled, it will irrevocably alter the Sonoran Desert.

We are in search of environmentally conscious individuals interested in becoming Buffelgrass Action Volunteers to assist with mapping and monitoring buffelgrass infestations, manually removing (pulling) infestations and delivering educational presentations to local community groups.

In the fall of 2008, a series of trainings are being offered for citizens interested in taking action against buffelgrass invasions in the Sonoran Desert.  Volunteers must be over 18 years old and those interested in mapping and manual removal must be in good physical shape. All volunteers must have a valid email address. The training is free but requires a volunteer service commitment.

For more information on the devastating effects of buffelgrass, visit www.buffelgrass.org

To register for the Buffelgrass Action Volunteer Training, email eeducation@pima.gov or call 520-615-7855.
