About the Program

The John A. Valenzuela Youth Center is administered by Pio Decimo Center in cooperation with the City of South Tucson, and Pima County Parks and Recreation. Our mission is to embrace the philosophy and spirit of South Tucson Police Officer, John A Valenzuela, of guiding and empowering the youth of our community through recreational and educational programs.

Youth Programs
We offer a variety of educational and recreational enrichment programs designed to keep youth off the streets, drug free and promote positive behavior.

Afterschool
Ages 5-12
Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, 2:30-5:00 p.m.; Wednesday, 1:00-5:00 p.m.

Tween and T een Program
Ages 12-18
Monday - Friday, 5:30-8:30 p.m.
Daily activities for both programs include art and crafts, nutritious cooking, board games, pool, organized sports leagues (indoor and outdoor), various field trips, weight room, fitness programs, computer lab, and general recreation.

JVYC also offers special events and classes including scrapbook, sports tournaments, cultural education, service-learning projects, self-defense, and dance.

Girlz Nite!
Special programming for young girls ages 10-18 in the South Tucson area focusing on education, career development, and empowerment courses.

Youth-to-Youth
This youth-lead organization focuses on keeping teens drug free through educational workshops and recreational activities.

Community Outreach Services

Case managers and office staff provide a connection to individuals in need with community based programs and services.

Wellness programs are offered throughout the year such as financial planning, fitness, emergency clothing, and health education.

Advisory Committee meets once a month to address community needs.

Youth Case Management services are offered through Pima County’s Youth Services, serving youth 14-21 years of age. Services include job/vocational training, GED placements, dropout prevention, job placement, career planning, and supportive services.

ESOL Classes:  Monday – Thursday, 9:00-11:00 a.m. In collaboration with Pima Community College for adult learners. Classes are available to any adult wanting to speak and write in English. Limited childcare is available.

All programs offered are free of charge.
