Downtown Merchant Coupon Book May Help Reduce Air Pollution and Save You Hundreds of Dollars!

Everyone is looking for ways to save money – Pima Association of Governments (PAG) RideShare Program and the Downtown Tucson Merchant Association are providing an opportunity to save hundreds of dollars with valuable coupons AND to make ridesharing connections for work commutes. Even though gas prices have been lower recently, saving more money can be done by sharing the costs of getting to work in a carpool or vanpool, and also by taking the bus, biking or walking instead of driving your vehicle. Driving causes about 60% of Tucson’s air pollution, and driving less by using alternate modes will definitely help improve air quality.
From January through March 2009, a special offer and reward of a Downtown Merchant Coupon Book will be sent to new registrants who complete their commuter profile at www.884ride.org. Within seconds of completing your profile, RideShare will give you a list of interested vanpool/carpool partners, information on which bus to take to work, or find you a bicycle buddy. After your profile is submitted, a coupon book will be mailed to your home address. Coupons will be good until June 30, 2009.
Remember, Pima County employees who use an alternate mode (bus, bike, car/vanpool, or walk) for their work commutes at least two days a week, are eligible for a free emergency taxi voucher from the Pima County employee Guaranteed Ride Home Program. Use the registration form (PDF), or you can e-mail karen.wilhelmsen@deq.pima.gov for more info. For more information on the coupon book or PAG’s programs, feel free to contact Rita Hildebrand at PAG at 792-1093 or rhildebrand@pagnet.org.

Why should you bother?
Use PAG’s Commute Cost Calculator to see just how much money you spend to operate your vehicle. Even with gas prices down from record highs, chances are you probably spend more than $3,000 to use your vehicle each year. Carpooling, vanpooling, riding the bus, bicycling, and walking can help you:
- save money on vehicle operating expenses, including fuel;
- save money on parking (if you work downtown);
- improve breathability of Tucson’s air; and
- if you register at www.884ride.org before the end of March, you can also save money using coupons from downtown merchants
