What: Join birding expert John Higgins for a guided bird walk in Tucson Mountain Park. Spot thrashers, wrens, quail, hawks and other birds of the desert southwest nestled among the saguaros and palo verdes. Be sure to bring binoculars and water.

Civilian Conservation Corp in SE Arizona

What: Each month the volunteer weed warriors work to eradicate buffelgrass and other exotic weeds. The Wednesday work parties are for the hardiest weed warriors and may require hiking in to infested areas and pulling buffelgrass on steep slopes. These are also some of the most precious and fragile habitats seriously impacted by buffelgrass invasions. Coordinators will provide instruction on plant identification and proper techniques for removal. This is strenuous work and volunteers need to be in very good physical condition. Gordon Hirabayashi Prison Honor Camp
What: Mary Farrell, US Forest Service archaeologist, will talk about the camp’s role in one of the most shameful events in U.S. history. The site has played a major role in the recognition, remembrance, and redefinition of this history, and the reconciliation of disparate struggle for civil rights.

What: Desert meets water at this unique oasis park, providing a unique crossroads for migratory and resident birds, some of which are unique to southeastern Arizona. Spot cardinals, thrashers, hummingbirds, songbirds and raptors nestled among the mesquites and palms. Binoculars are available for use during the walk or bring your own.

Home is Where the Hole is
What: Have you ever and noticed a hole in the ground and wondered what animal made it? Holes, depressions and burrows in the ground are a little investigated phenomenon that presents a fascinating look into the lives of our wildlife neighbors. Pinau Merlin, a naturalist and author of several books including The Field Guide to Desert Holes, will lead this walk. Reservations required.

Tucson’s River of Words 2008 Traveling Exhibit
What: Tucson’s River of Words is more than a youth poetry and art contest, it is a cycle of activities each building upon the next. The vibrant images and lyrical poems from the 2008 Tucson’s River of Words are expressions of the durable connections to nature that these young artists share.

Wake Up with the Birds
What: Desert meets water at this unique oasis park, providing a unique crossroads for migratory and resident birds, some of which are unique to southeastern Arizona. Spot cardinals, thrashers, hummingbirds, songbirds and raptors nestled among the mesquites and palms. Binoculars are available for use during the walk or bring your own.
Date: Every Tuesday in February
Time: 8:30 a.m.–10:00 a.m.
