Nature Discovery at Agua Caliente Park

What: Fun activities for the whole family—Agua Caliente Park is home to many types of birds, lizards, and insects, but did you know that deer, raccoons, and coyotes also visit the park? Even though we may not see them, we know they are here because of the clues they leave. Join us at this interactive discovery program to look for signs of wildlife. Participants will also make their own animal tracks book. Program lasts approximately 90 minutes.

Living with Urban Wildlife

What: As Tucson's urban core grows, we must learn how to peacefully coexist with desert wildlife in an urban setting. Join local “bugman”, Carl Olson, from the University of Arizona for an hour-long presentation about living with urban insects. Learn about some of the common venomous and non-venomous desert insects and how to safely observe and appreciate these interesting arthropods in an urban setting. There will be plenty of free handouts available, with helpful information for the newcomer or long-term residents. Program lasts approximately 60 minutes.

Digital Nature Photography for Beginners

What: Getting a great image in nature can be frustrating especially when trying to navigate all the confusing settings that come on most modern digital cameras. Learn tips from local naturalists and photography experts, Doug and Doris Evans on how to take a great photograph with your digital camera. The course will cover basic manual and automatic settings equipped on most point-and-shoot digital cameras as well as tips for choosing the right memory card, lighting compensation and flash settings, appropriate shutter speeds and composition. After exploring your camera's capabilities, take a stroll around the beautiful walking trails at Feliz Paseos Park in search of great photo opportunities. Program lasts approximately 2 hours. Agua Caliente Park: Life in an Oasis

What: Enjoy a guided tour of the historic buildings and landscape of Agua Caliente Park to understand how the year-round presence of water from the spring shaped the lives of people and how people shaped the land. Program lasts approximately 90 minutes.

Agua Caliente Historic Lecture Series

What: Famous and Infamous Women in Early Arizona: Historian, Richard Sense, discusses the courageous, outrageous, and creative women who helped tame the wild frontier from Spanish Colonial times to Arizona statehood in 1912. Program lasts approximately 60 minutes.

Watchable Wildlife at Agua Caliente Park

What: There is always something to see at Agua Caliente Park, from turtles basking in the sun, to great horned owls roosting in the palms. Learn simple ways to spot wildlife at the park and come back on your own to make new discoveries. Program lasts approximately 90 minutes.

Sonoran Desert Weedwackers

What: Join the good works of the all-volunteer Sonoran Desert Weedwackers and help restore the health of the Sonoran Desert by removing invasive Buffelgrass from Tucson Mountain Park . Experts will provide instruction on plant identification and proper techniques for removal. Gloves and digging bars are provided. Make sure to bring a hat, plenty of water, sunscreen and snacks. Weedwacking requires good physical health and sturdy shoes. For more information, call 520-615-7855, ext. 103.

Sonoran Desert Kids Club: Life in the Saguaros

What: Saguaro cactus serve as a desert hotel for many types of animals. Some bird species, like woodpeckers, make holes in saguaros that later provide homes for other types of animals. Use binoculars to look for saguaros with woodpecker holes. Program lasts approximately 90 minutes.

Tucson Mountain Park Birding Walk

What: Join birding expert John Higgins, for a guided bird walk in Tucson Mountain Park. Spot thrashers, wrens, quail, hawks and other birds of the desert southwest nestled among the saguaros and paloverdes. Be sure to bring plenty of water. Walk lasts approximately 90 minutes.

Family Birding

What: Bring the whole family and discover the diversity of birdlife attracted to Agua Caliente's spring fed ponds and lush riparian and desert habitats. Traditional O'odham Basket Making

What: Learn the ancient craft of basketry as taught by a native O'odham basket weaver, and ethnobotanist Martha Burgess. Learn about the harvesting and processing techniques for soap tree yucca, bear grass, devil' claw, and yucca root. Participants will be provided with natural fibers to try their hand at coiling their own basket. Program lasts approximately 3 hours. Workshop fee is $20 and reservations are required. What: Artist, Regina Ammerman, presents Venture into Spring , a watercolor exhibit featuring fresh watercolors of the people and places of the desert southwest.

Program lasts approximately 60-90 minutes.
