Nature Journaling at Agua Caliente Park
What: Nature journaling has become a popular way for people to explore the natural world while exploring their own creative abilities. Learn to use writing and sketching to record your reflections about the Sonoran Desert around you. Bring something to sit on and something to write on.

Tucson Mountain Wildflower Walks
What: Learn to identify the bright and showy as well as the small and inconspicuous wildflowers that are likely to be abundant this spring. Naturalist and Pima County Educator Meg Quinn will identify annual and perennial wildflowers and discuss the conditions that lead to an explosion of showy annuals such as gold poppy, lupine, owl clover, and bladder pod. Reservations required.

Living with Urban Wildlife: Bats
What: Join local bat expert and University of Arizona professor, Ronnie Sidner, for an hour-long presentation about living with urban bats. Learn the myths about the common desert bat species and how to safely observe and appreciate these interesting animals in an urban setting. There will be plenty of free handouts available, with helpful information for the newcomer or long-term residents.

Geology Legacy Tour
What: Join renowned local geologist Bob Scarborough for a geology tour of the east side of the Tucson basin. Starting at Agua Caliente Park, we will make several stops to examine chapters of our geologic past that are revealed by features in the landscape. Stops will include Colossal Cave, Pantano Wash and other sites. Van transport will be provided. Program fee is $15 and reservations are required.

Twilight Walk at Feliz Paseos Park
What: Take a relaxing, naturalist-guided stroll through the park and experience the quiet of the desert at dusk. You’ll also discover why many desert creatures are active at this time of day. One-hour guided walks on paved and gravel paths are open to all ages and abilities.

Discovering Nature’s Treasures
What: We’ll explore the wonders of Agua Caliente Park using a map and compass to find our way from one treasure to the next.  A Junior Naturalists’ backpack, filled with other special tools for science study, will be used to enhance hands-on discovery.

Saguaros to Ponderosa Pines — Mt. Lemmon Trip
What: Experience the diversity of vegetation zones during a scenic drive up Mt. Lemmon. Heidi Schewel, of Coronado National Forest, will discuss the changing landscapes at certain key stops along the way. She will also describe how fire has impacted the Catalina Mountains and how the vegetation is recovering from the Aspen Fire. Van transportation will be provided and reservations are required.

Tucson Mountain Park Birding Walk
What: Join birding expert John Higgins, for a guided bird walk in Tucson Mountain Park. Spot thrashers, wrens, quail, hawks and other birds of the desert southwest nestled among the saguaros and paloverdes. Be sure to bring plenty of water. Walk lasts approximately 90 minutes.

What: History of the Tanque Verde Valley: Join freelance writer, photographer and amateur historian, Jorga Riggenbach, for an enthusiastic presentation inspired by personal interviews with the long-time residents of the Tanque Verde Valley including the A7 and Bellota ranches. Program lasts approximately 60 minutes.

Digital Nature Photography for Beginners
What: Learn tips from local naturalists and photography experts, Doug and Doris Evans on how to take a great photograph with your digital camera. The course will cover basic manual and automatic settings equipped on most point-and-shoot digital cameras as well as tips for choosing the right memory card, lighting compensation and flash settings, appropriate shutter speeds and composition. After exploring your camera’s capabilities, take a stroll around the beautiful walking trails at Feliz Paseos Park in search of great photo opportunities. Workshop fee is $10 and reservations are required.

Sonoran Desert Weedwackers
What: Join the good works of the all-volunteer Sonoran Desert Weedwackers and help restore the health of the Sonoran Desert by removing invasive Buffelgrass from Tucson Mountain Park. Experts will provide instruction on plant identification and proper techniques for removal. Gloves and digging bars are provided. Make sure to bring a hat, plenty of water, sunscreen and snacks. Weedwacking requires good physical health and sturdy shoes. Call for meeting location.

Cholla Bud Workshop
What: Join workshop leader Martha Burgess for a morning of collecting, cooking and tasting the flower buds of buckhorn cholla prepared in the traditional O’odham way. The preparation and cooking will take place at the entrance ramada (collecting will be at a nearby site). Workshop fee is $15 and reservations are required.

Desert Plant Uses Workshop Series—Nopalitos Workshop
What: Discover an age-old, nutrient-rich desert vegetable—our local prickly pear. Perhaps best known for the juicy, purple fruits, this workshop will explore the uses of the fresh young pads of prickly pear. Workshop leader Martha Burgess will demonstrate harvesting techniques, and show how to safely remove the persistent spines. We will then cook and taste the delicious results of our labors. Workshop fee is $15 and reservations are required.

Brown Mountain Cactus Hike
What: Join Environmental Educator and local botanical expert, Meg Quinn, for a guided walk on Brown Mountain Loop Trail. Learn about the ecology and uses of some of the many species of cactus found in the desert. Hike is at a moderate to strenuous level with steep uphill portions.
