Adkins Parcel Selective Demolition Project

The Selective Demolition Project is Phase 1 of a 3-Phase set of funded projects to implement the first stage of the Fort Lowell Park Master Plan, November 2009. The project is a joint program of the City of Tucson and Pima County and is funded by Pima County Bonds.

This Phase 1 Selective Demolition Project will remove several non-contributing, non-historic, unsafe structures from the site – including the Adkins Steel Shed, the Magor House, the Windmill Base and several concrete pads and structures. The work of Phase 1 is expected to take no longer than 45 days.

Phase 2, which is anticipated to begin in October 2010, will remove contaminated soils from the site. All work in Phases 1 and 2 will be monitored for safety and archaeological compliance. Phase 2 is being funded by the City of Tucson, with a grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

Phase 3 will begin in the late spring of 2011 and will consist of the rehabilitation of Officers Quarters #3 and the protection and interpretation of Officers Quarters #1, and # 2 as per the recommendations of the Fort Lowell Park Master Plan, and the Preservation Plan for the Adkins parcel at Fort Lowell Park, November 2009. Stabilization work will also be performed on the ca.1934 Adkins residence.

Fort Lowell Master Plan Public Meeting #3

City of Tucson Parks and Recreation and Pima County Cultural Resources and Historic Preservation Office held a public meeting from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, February 18th at the Carol W. West Senior Addition for the Fort Lowell Park Master Plan. At this final public meeting, the consultant team presented a draft final concept for the Fort Lowell Park Master Plan. The preferred concept reflects input from various stakeholders, resource managers, and the public. This meeting provided the public with an opportunity to comment on the Master Plan before it is further developed and ultimately presented to the Board of Supervisors and Mayor and Council.

A primary goal of the Master Plan is to integrate resources from the entire park, including those on the Adkins Parcel, located at the Southwest corner of Fort Lowell and Craycroft Roads. Existing recreational and sports fields and the natural area bordering the Pantano Wash are also included in the Master Plan.

Your input into the future of this historical park, and the appropriate balance of uses on the site, is central to the planning process.
