NEW - We just added the Adobe
Repair Workshop !
Adobe Repair Workshop at the 1873 Fort Lowell Officers’ Quarters
February 16 – 20, 2009. Fort Lowell Park, Tucson.
A five-day
Adobe Repair workshop was held February 16 – 20
at the Fort Lowell Officers Quarters. The workshop was open to
City and County staff as an introduction to the maintenance and
repair of historic adobe buildings. The three Officers’ Quarters
at Fort Lowell became the hands-on classroom for approximately
20 men and women.
The workshop was offered by Mr. David Yubeta, internationally
recognized expert in earthen architecture, and a Restoration
Specialist with the National Park Service (NPS) at Tumacacori
National Historical Park. Workshop staff included participants
with the Vanishing Treasures Program which exists within the
NPS to train craftsmen in traditional building practices.
The workshop was able to accomplish a number of important repair
and maintenance tasks, including:
Protective re-capping of exposed adobe walls with a sacrificial
coating of adobe mud,
Removal of cast-in place concrete walls (“contra-pared”)
that were damaging the adobe walls
Install missing adobes
Repair of a deteriorated upper corner of a parapet wall
Repair of a deteriorated window opening
Apply an experimental coating of adobe plaster and lime plaster
on the east-facing wall of the kitchen ruin.
Special thanks go to David Yubeta and his staff, and to the
City of Tucson who helped organize and support this event.
