Brandi Fenton Memorial Park

Brandi Fenton Memorial Park
At Binghampton National Historic Landscape

Project Description

The 56 acre Brandi Fenton Memorial Park is located within the 427 acre Binghampton National Historic Landscape (listed in the National Register of Historic Places, 2003). The Binghampton area of Tucson was settled by Mormons in 1898 and served as a rural, agrarian community until the early 1950s. The area largely retains its rural flavor. Located on River Road just north of the Rillito River, it is part of the Pima County parks system.

Brandi Fenton Memorial Park is the result of a unique partnership between public and private sectors. The Fenton family initiated a public-private partnership to help fund and develop the park, in memory of their daughter. In 2004, the Pima County Board of Supervisors named the project “Brandi Fenton Memorial Park” to honor her life and memory. In May of 2004, the public voted to contribute $3,000,000 to the project costs (through Bond Ordinance No. 2004 – 18 / 4.24 Brandi Fenton Memorial Park at Binghampton Historic District). The park was dedicated in December 2006, the culmination of unprecedented effort and cooperation. Additionally, there was generous gifting from a wide range of private citizens, professionals, and businesses. Many of the donations were of materials and services.

At the center of the park is the Visitor Center, and adjacent Memorial Garden where visitors can enjoy peaceful gardens, amid trees and the sound of splashing water from a large sculptural fountain.

The park includes a large number of recreational facilities, including covered basket ball courts, playgrounds and a splash park, soccer fields, ramadas structures for picnicking, dog parks, and a Equestrian Center (currently under development). The park is also linked to a system of bike-paths and trails. One of the most significant achievements of the project was to incorporate existing historic buildings and features into the function of the park.
