Monsoons are Dangerous for Motorists and Children

About half of all flood-related deaths in Pima County involve vehicles trapped in or washed down rushing watercourses during our intense late-summer storms. Severely flooded water crossings should be avoided, and it is illegal to go around barricades that public safety agencies put up to prevent motorists from trying to drive through them. Already this summer motorists or their passengers have perished in raging monsoon storm flows. When you're behind the wheel, please obey signs and avoid rushing washes.
It also is dangerous for children to play in flowing waters of these summer monsoon storms. Not only can they be swept downstream to their deaths, but they also can be injured on underwater debris or made ill by water-borne contaminants.
Downed power lines are another monsoon-storm danger for motorists and children. If you see a power line down, call 9-1-1 and report it immediately.
