The Real Story About Your Taxes

About this time of year, we often hear stories about the Pima County Budget and its affects on all of us. This year, I believe that there has been even greater interest due to the state of the economy, as well as the effects of deficit budgets at the federal and the state levels.

As Pima County Supervisor for District 2, one of my greatest priorities is to make decisions that are fiscally responsible while ensuring that we continue to provide the necessary and critical services for our community. We have made many difficult decisions over the past several months and years and I anticipate that we will continue to make them.

However, as a result of these decisions, there are some very positive aspects about Pima County’s budget that I want to share with you. When you check the facts Pima County has:

    • Saved taxpayers about $55 million over the past 4 years
    • Lowered the Primary Property Tax rate to its LOWEST

in 30 years

    • Cut general fund for the first time in 12 years
    • Reduced the County workforce by some 544 employees

As a taxpayer, it is important for you to know that Pima County, by law, collects property taxes on behalf of all 84 taxing entities in the county. While your tax bill comes from Pima County, the county receives between 25-33% of your total tax amount with the remainder going to the different taxing entities such as cities, towns, the community college district, school district and other taxing districts.

Please review the information which is enclosed. Should you have any questions or further comments, please feel free to contact my office and share them with me.

Sincerely,

Ramón Valadez
County Supervisor
District 2
