Parks

If there is one thing we don’t have enough of in district one, it is parks. With our population approaching the million mark, it is important that we find ways to preserve a way of life and open space for recreational opportunities. As we work to implement the Sonoran Desert Conservation Plan (SDCP) and preserve the large landscapes that surround us, we're also building an extensive network of trails and river parks closer to our homes and neighborhoods. These river parks, such as the one planned to follow the Cañada del Oro wash from the county line all the way to the Santa Cruz River, provide for urban green belts and do much to enhance our quality of life.

The county's ambitious plan to construct a regional trail network will ensure we will always have access to the natural areas that make Pima County such a special place to live. Under the 2004 bond program, we expect to spend $39 million on development of our river parks and trails system. Under the 1997 bond program, we set aside more than $2 million specifically for the construction of new trailheads and trails. We expect to have a half dozen of these projects completed within the next year and a half. These new trails will provide hiking, mountain biking and horseback riding opportunities.
