Economic Development
The old west was luring residents here looking inward with a perpetual
real estate economy. But now that we are in a 21st century knowledge
economy, we have to seize the initiative on globalization if we are to
build a sustainable community. Recently, more leaders in our community
are recognizing the need to form new ties with Mexico, not only in Sonora,
but also with Mexicali in the State of Baja. Pima County is ideally situated
because of our geographical proximity and cultural ties. If Arizona doesn’t
make the most of its relationship with México, it could miss out
on new jobs, investments, tax revenue and exports in the coming decades.
Recently, a group of local business leaders and representatives from
TREO, the State and the County, traveled to Mexicali to start a dialogue
with key representatives from the local power base, to develop a strategic
economic, cultural and educational partnership. We are neighbors but
we don’t know each other. We believe there are tremendous opportunities
for TREO and Mexicali to do a win-win partnership and forge closer ties.
