Archaeological Photos

Occasionally, people who are downtown see
a mysterious white balloon over the project area. The balloon
is helium filled, and is tethered with rope to three people on
the ground. A digital camera mounted on a black self-leveling
device hangs just below the balloon. The camera is operated by
remote control by an archaeologist on the ground. The balloon
mounted camera provides excellent vertical bird's-eye view photos
of features within the project area, for example, the photos
of the historic house foundations at 34
and 48 E Alameda.
