The backhoe clears a section
along the house foundation of 34 E. Alameda.
Note the specially modified flat blade on the bucket to provide a clean surface
along the bottom of the cut. This allows the archaeologists to identify the tops
of any features. Once found features are mapped and excavated, usually by hand.
