Lesser Long-Nosed Bat
Leptonycteris curasoae yerbabuenae
The lesser long-nosed bat is a medium
sized bat. Adults have yellow-brown or gray fur above, and rusty
brown fur below. The wings are black. Lesser long-nose bats are
found in the desert scrub habitat. They roost in caves, abandoned
buildings and mines. This bat feeds on fruit and nectar
from saguaro (shown here), Organ Pipe cactus, and agave flowers.
By eating the nectar, pollen, and fruit of these species of plants,
the bat is an important pollinator.
