About the After School/Summer Program

This program is designed to focus on enrichment and learning opportunities for Pima County elementary school-aged youth by providing a stimulating, active, and safe environment for children to learn and grow through recreation-based activities.  Each program is planned to promote cultural and environmental awareness in a safe, supervised location that is convenient and affordable to families in both rural and urban school districts within Pima County.

The Pima County Board of Supervisors, in conjunction with various county school districts, provides a vital service for residents of Pima County through the After School/Summer Program.  This experience allows youth to take advantage of an array of constructive, adult supervised activities designed to give educational support and prevent delinquency and negative peer pressure.

Through a safe, constructive after-school environment for latchkey children, the program serves two critical aspects for youth development.  (1) A supervised neighborhood setting for recreational activities that include a variety of arts and crafts events, field trips, and group sports activities for children to engage, learn and grow through educational experiences and peer interaction.  (2) Helps prevent involvement in dangerous or delinquent behavior and supports educational goals.

Program Guidelines

The schools that use the program are as varied as the communities in which the participating children live.  However, all programs must meet these minimum guidelines to be eligible for funding:

  • Provide a secure meeting location for elementary school aged children
  • Provide qualified staff to assist the children, track their performance and attendance, and communicate with parents to ensure the student's progress
  • Provide program activities before and/or after the regularly scheduled school hours throughout the calendar year with the exception to school and legal holidays
  • Any fees charged for participation in program activities will be based on a sliding scale (set by the school) and adjusted for household income at the rates to allow students from low and moderate households to attend
  • Program activities will all include a variety of indoor and outdoor group activities, focused on arts and crafts, and recreation that encourage children to learn and grow among peers
  • School districts not currently receiving DES child care subsidy funding will actively work on becoming eligible for this funding during the 2005/06 contract year.  Approximately 50% of the student population is eligible to receive assistance for childcare and/or after-school programs
